My Sibelius arrived today. I see it's warmly endorsed on the back of the box by no less a luminary than Steve Reich. I guess notation programs are even more of a godsend to minimalists than they are to everyone else.  Tongue

I'm unable to resist mentioning David Lang's This Was Written By Hand at this juncture.

How are you getting on with Sibelius then Richard?

Installation seemed to go smoothly.

Since I shall no doubt be posting endless moans and frustrations on this subject for some time, I thought I'd better start putting them in their proper place rather than using the whatever-thread-I-happen-to-be-looking-at approach. Well, I decided I'd start with the first bit of my new score which is completely clear in my head (and on paper) and is moreover (a) relatively simple in terms of notation and (b) the kind of thing that is probably easier to do on the screen than with a pen, given that it's (one layer of a more complex texture which is) a canon for 24-part pizzicato strings (I believe this is what is called plink-plonk music in the musicological profession). Having decided on the page size (A2!), put in the barlines for this entire section, and the instrument names, and the time-signatures in my chosen font, with some behind-the-scenes help from Messrs Dough and Harmony, it's time to start putting the notes in. How exciting!

Just don't be shocked when Sibelius starts re-formatting your pages/ systems as the notes go in! It's nothing to worry about, and you can always 'lock' pages later. And it's kind of fun to see it happen. Bon chance.

Exciting indeed!  I look forward to real-time reports.  Having more or less decisively abandoned Finale I sympathize with your plight and wish you Godspeed.

So far so good. I'm beginning to see the attraction in this... what do you call it again... rhythmic unison.

R, although Sib. 5 autosaves, you may find that it's worth acquiring the habit of clicking the save button regularly anyway, especially whilst you're learning the programme: in the early days things can have a habit of going beserk at the worst possible moment....
