What about The Barley Mow - 127 Curtain Road (just round the corner from the church)? Seems like a friendly joint (with an Ozzie barman who "swears in a pleasant manner" - according to reports). http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/34/342/Barley_Mow/ShoreditchJust a thought - though I've never been myself! Yes, well, some of us prefer to avoid places full of posh tossers.

There's an interesting sub-topic: which philosophers are muggers and which more liable to get mugged? I'd love to see my old teacher/sparring-partner Antony Flew get mugged by Wittgenstein! Update. Not having heard anything of AF for some years and suddenly worried he might be dead, I've just checked Wikipedia and found out that he's renounced atheism. Now, I'm sure this is of no interest at all to anyone other than me and possibly George, but ... well, I'm shocked. OK. I'm going off to lie down and recover. Sorry for being quite so far off-topic. But it was Lord B who brought up philosophers.

I'm somewhat astonished to note that you would prefer such a joint to one of those many outlets serving a "civilized" Afternoon Tea. Have you perhaps gone off your crumpets? Baz

I don't know which specific article you're trying to point me to, Lord B, but I didn't know Jean Baudrillard had died, so thanks for the link. (Not that I can actually access the obituary. )

I love my tea, even going to the tea museum on the 23rd with london[edited] but one assumes the concert will be ending in the evening, am I wrong about this ? My exhaustive research indicates that the most obvious place, the national, serves the best afternoon tea but do not be bullied into the cafe bit,try get a nice view of nelsons column. http://www.thenationaldiningrooms.co.uk/aftertea.htmRemember to go have a sigh at the virgin on the rocks. Byron actually very poor but with the style of a 'posh tosser'

You know, Lord B, you are not the only one who goes to opera, concerts and galleries. Please don't imply that we haven't a clue what to do.
If you are not coming.... fine, lots of lovely people are.
