As alluded to on another thread, I have to be in Edinburgh on the weekend of Saturday 18 October. I am going to a wedding that afternoon and so will be busy all afternoon and evening.

I plan to travel up on Friday 17th, and have been offered a place to stay on the Friday and Saturday nights.

Being very short of money at the moment, I've been doing some exploring on the web this afternoon. The cheapest way of travelling by train seems to be £30 each way (and I can't actually see any £30 tickets left for the journey up on the Friday). National Express has a coach service for £15 each way. Megabus, unless I'm completely misunderstanding the information their site gives me, seems to have tickets for £7 for the journey up, and £5 for the return journey on either Sunday or Monday. I can't quite believe my luck, but if Megabus really is this much cheaper than any of the other options, then I certainly plan to endure the 9½-hour journey each way for this price. However, I'm not incredibly keen on the idea of spending the whole of Friday's daylight hours on a coach, Saturday at the wedding, and then straight back on a coach at 11am on Sunday (and this would also leave me without any time to catch up with any r3ok members).

So ... would any members be available on the Sunday afternoon and/or evening, which would make it worth my while staying for an extra day? It would mean me finding somewhere else to stay on the Sunday night, but I think it would be worth it in the circumstances.

I suppose the other option is for me to get an overnight coach back on Sunday night, though on balance I think I'd prefer to get a night's sleep in in Edinburgh and then travel back on the Monday ...

I'll be around and probably at a loose end, so would be very happy to meet up!

Use to use the overnight buses quite a bit, 'tisnow: really not that bad, and save wasting a whole day.

I'll be able to make at least some of the Sunday, though since Edinburgh parking is legendarily horrendous, will need to explore the public transport alternatives....

Looks like I'm likely to be around too (in other words, "I seem to be free that sunday as the other half is working"  Wink ) so will pencil you in! Afternoon or evening would be fine, I think.

Great that you can make it too, Stuart!

I've received a kind offer of a place to stay on Sunday night, so I've booked the 11am coach back on Monday and will be free all Sunday afternoon and evening (which means if not everyone can make it to Edinburgh at the same time of day then we can do a sort of relay event).

Are there any other members north of the border???

I'm aware of at least one more occasional visitor to these boards....

Looks as if my part of the relay will run from early afternoon to early evening.

After the two visits to the Sonic Fusion Festival, and the discovery of the Ferrytoll free car park at Inverkeithing, with regular buses into Edinburgh, I'll be able to arrive earlier and leave later.

I'll be staying in Wallyford on the Saturday night (not entirely sure how far this is from the city centre); I expect I'll be free to head into town after a late breakfast/brunch on the Sunday.

Wallyford's about 10 miles to the east, near Musselburgh, 'tisnow: there are trains as well as buses into Edinburgh: 12 mins by train, about 3 times as long by bus. Trains at 11:41, 12:41, and 13:44 around Sunday brunchtime.

Only a thought, but if we were able to get to Glasgow in time for this, it might be worth reorganising the day slightly....

If there's no take-up for the Glasgow outreach, I think I'll probably take the 1241 or 1344 train into Edinburgh, arriving - as Ron kindly confirms - 12 minutes later. I'm happy to amuse myself if there are times when others aren't around, but by the current sound of things we could look forward to a late lunch (me, Ron, anyone else??), and hopefully some hh- and macrae-attended festivities later in the afternoon/evening?

Anyone seen Stuart around recently?!

The late-lunch-in-Edinburgh scenario sounds good to me - I'll probably head back to Glasgow some time late afternoon as I have a busy couple of weeks coming up, but it will be nice to meet some of you finally!

So, I'll keep an eye out here for the emergence of 'the plan' and take the train over accordingly!

I've deliberately kept my diary free for the day, so I can meet you from the train and a late lunch sounds great!

Late lunch is fine for me, too: as mentioned before, now that most of the journey can be done by car, the actual time of my arrival in Edinburgh may well depend on the light, and how long I want to trek round with the cameras before meeting up: I'll assume that you'll be on the earlier train, t, and plan accordingly; if you're not, there's plenty to keep me occupied for an hour.
