A few weeks ago Ian suggested Thursday 19th April for a London get-together for members of this board. A suggested that I start a new thread to highlight this and martle, time_is_now, Richard and Morticia have already signalled their availability at this time.
I'd suggest the same place and time as previously - 7.00 in the King's Head near the Barbican unless anyone (A ?) has a fundamental objection or a better idea ?

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=532529&y=181933&z=0&ar=Y
(I seem to remember that the entrance is in Milton Street despite what the map indicates)

For those for whom such matters are important (and some of these, at least, seem particularly relevant) I would point out that 19th April is a notable date which offers a number of anniversaries such as

1587 - Sir Francis Drake sails a small number of ships into Cadiz harbour and sinks most of
          the Spanish fleet
1775 - start of the American War of Independence
1810 - Venezuela achieves home rule
1824 - death of Lord Byron
1834 - the gas meter is patented by Carl Ludwig Farwig
1927 - Mae West found guilty of indecent behaviour in her Broadway production of "Sex"
1943 - Swiss chemist Dr. Albert Hofmann takes LSD for the first time
1951 - General Douglas MacArthur retires from the military
1961 - Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba ends in failure
1985 - Advance Australia fair is proclaimed as Australia's national anthem

not forgetting the birthdays of Germaine Tailleferre (1893), Eliot Ness (1903), Dickie Bird (1933), Dudley Moore (1935), Murray Perahia (1947), Kelly Holmes (1970) and Jason Gillespie (1975).

Oh - and it's Bicycle Day.

I have looked for him (Lord Byron) in the sick room, but he's not there...

Sorry I wont be able to come to your get-together, I'll be here in Cornwall. If it's bicycle day, that's where I'll be,

It looks like I'll probably be out of town on a German course which doesn't finish until the 20th (didn't check that when I initially suggested the date). Anyhow, though you might all like this (with apologies to Britten):

Apparently he's going to the Wigmore Hall ALONE. I would have thought he could leg it over for last rites - er - orders ?

Even with the dodgy foot, he could surely mount a waiting stallion in a dashing Byronic sort of way.

It's not a real objection autoharp but it was very noisy especially when we arrived. I couldn't hear a thing.. or am I getting old (don't nswer that!!)

I just thought that there must be more pubs in London than possibly anwhere else where anyone lives, so why not a slightly quieter one for a 'talking place'....??

A - I know what you mean: on the other hand, I seem to remember that it had thinned out considerably by about 8.00 - and we were able to move to a bigger table. I can't remember music being intrusive either. And given the central location . . . I wonder if the advantages outweigh the initial disadvantage ? What do you reckon ? (Any views or suggestions from anybody ?)

Hi guys

...um, meet at 8 rather than 7? Although, how many of us can actually make this date? Might it be worth planning one further on this month, or next, to maximise attendance?

(And that may enable a few non-southerners to hop on board too - with ample time for them to plan any southern business they may have to coincide.)

The date is fine with me, and 16, 17 or 18 April would also be fine. As for the venue, A, by the time I arrived last time (indeed around 8, despite my best intentions, owing to the gentle ministrations of London's historic Metropolitan Line) it seemed fairly calm to me. The advantage of meeting in the City area is that the pubs there empty out relatively early, after most of the customers have had their quick one after a day in the office and gone home. Places in the West End tend to be noisier. But, since wherever we go will involve my somehow escaping from the Uxbridge Triangle for the evening, I really don't mind if it's somewhere else.

I suggest we stick with the date (or something else that week). After all, m, we can always arrange another meeting later in the summer for travellers from the North to join us.

As for venue, Richard's right, City pubs have the advantage of emptying out pretty quickly after rush hour, whereas anywhere else we choose might be quiet to start with but would only get busier as the evening went on.

On the other hand, that mention of Triangles makes me wonder: how about somewhere more exotic? Anyone for Bermuda?

I may be back now by the 19th; the earlier dates are out of the question.

So maybe 7.00 on the 19th at aforementioned is the best option ? A - is that OK with you ?

I have to say that if it is 7pm we won't be there til 8, as it was so rowdy last time until then and I couldn't hear what anyone was saying, but, all being well we can probably make it at 8.
I also have to say that the Barbican is not really central... what about the Chandos pub at Trafalgar square?, I will go with the flow though.
