Wow!

I finally got round to buying cantus arcticus, and got some other works too.  Angels and visitations is astonishing!  I like the violin concerto so far.

Anyone else like him?

Yes, I've got three Rautavaara cds. A couple on Naxos and one on BIS. The Cantus Articus I have on Naxos is coupled with the first piano concerto and third symphony, the other Naxos is Angel of Light and the seventh symphony and on BIS I have the violin concerto coupled with the eighth symphony. Royal Scottish National Orchestra on Naxos and Vanska and the Lahti on BIS. There's another relatively short lived thread on here somewhere from a few months back but I couldn't track it down. At least two others expressed enthusiasm ! Won't hazard a guess as to who they were ( well, alright, was one of them Gabby / Chichivache ? )

Yes, Tommo!

I first got to know him through his third piano concerto, subtitled 'The Gift of Dreams' written for Ashkenazy:

Since then, I've explored some of his concertos, including the one for violin, and some of his later symphonies:

The Clarinet Concerto is well worth getting, not least for some extraordinary playing by Richard Stoltzman. I find Rautavaara's music very beautiful and lyrical. I have heard some of the earlier symphonies, Nos. 4 and 5, which are much less so, more atonal. I much prefer his later style. Another composer who shares a similar sound world is Peteris Vasks, although to my ears it's a more 'muscular' symphonic sound. I really enjoyed his 2nd and Symphonies. Back with Rautavaara, his 'Dances with Winds' is interesting, a concerto for flutes, including passages played on bass flute and piccolo. Ondine and BIS have both done this composer proud. I haven't explored any of his operas yet.

IGI,

In fact it's the middle two CDs I have just bought.  'Garden' is fabbo, as is "Island of Bliss"

I'll hunt down the others (bank account permitting!)

Speaking of clarinet concertos recorded by the Ondine label: do you know the Anders Hillborg's Clarinet Concerto? Roll Eyes

I don't know the Hillborg concerto, Pim, but I gather it includes movement around the concert platform? What's it like? There are certainly some fine clarinet concertos that have come from Scandinavia recently - Magnus Lindberg's is being performed at the Proms this season (with Kari Krikku) and I also enjoyed Kalevi Aho's (on BIS with Martin Fröst).

It's really a very interesting concerto, Il Grande Inquisitor. It starts with a very long introduction for clarinet solo. It's goes on for minutes (rather like the beginning of the Lutoslawski Cello Concerto) and than the orchestra comes in. I think this is the most exciting orchestral entry that I've ever heard. This concerto is really something special.

Mention of the Hillborg concerto rang a bell with me, and I find that a shortened version of it with synthesizers was broadcast on TTN some time back, and that I'd recorded it. Even better was that the intro mentioned that the piece was choreographed, and that a video of another shortened version existed: it's here:
