I just wish now I'd said Little Red Rooster instead. None of this would have happened  Cheesy

Does a riff have to be in the bass for it to be a riff?

Here's a non bass riff to wake up your mitochondria. It always sounds to me like the fanfare of some extraordinary excitement coming racing down the pipeline towards you.

And Jean Genie although probably the simplest and easiest to play of any of the riffs mentioned, would be hard to forget once you'd heard it I'd have thought.

For the most shameless recycling of one riff through an entire career ( and a riff that wasn't originally his anyway ) the prize must go to Elmore James with Dust My Broom etc. Bo's was more of a rhythm than a riff.

Compare and contrast. The second riff was the target of a court case brought by the author of the first in the 80s.

Mr Berry successfully sued the Beach Boys didn't he ? ( Sweet Little Sixteen / Surfin' USA )

It has to be said that virtually all of the recognisable rock riffs we have come up with are blues based.

I don't really know what George & Mort are referring to - cacophagy?
cacophagy? or coprophagy?

Interesting point, Kitty.  The latter is the word I wanted but couldn't remember - or what is unfashionably known as the correct word.  The former is one I cobbled together myself only to discover, with the assistance of google, that I was not the first person to do so:

Thank you for your reassurance HtoHe. Now I won't have to face bedtime under the suspicion that my vocabulary might be inadequate.

...... The one I really love - though it isn't quite as widely-known and might not be a proper riff - is that addictive little motif that runs through most of Gimme Shelter .....

How about that catchy little guitar riff at the end of Hit me with your rhythm stick?  .
