It appears that, despite Mr Wright's best efforts, there has been a little publicity for the ending of Mixing It:

I wonder if there is any substance to the last sentence about Resonance FM?

Thanks to everyone for kind words. All greatly appreciated. Big piece in today's Independent On Sunday by Nicholas Lezard about Mixing It. It's a review of the Berlin Special but he also talks about it finishing and does it signal the end of the avant garde on R3? I don't know anything about MI on Resonance FM. If there are any plans/news i'll post them  here.

Thanks,

Mark Russell

I for one, would love an MI move to Resonance. But those guys are really stuck for cash right now. Then again, perhaps the huge exodus of listeners MI would bring might mean more donations to London's quirkiest and most interesting station?

Dear Mark Russell

Thanks for your post - really important that the public gets to know the inside story about the inner machinations of Radio 3. I'm deeply sorry to hear about the axing of Mixing It, and am mystified as to why Roger Wright wanted to do it. The programme reflected a really vibrant area of contemporary culture, and Radio 3 is just shooting itself in the foot by not reflecting it. It's quite wrong to say that this area is catered for on Late Junction. It kind of is. But LJ has a discernibly different brief (also important), and in any case, Wright's handling of *that* show in the recent round of rescheduling has hardly been emancipatory.

I'm currently writing an academic article about LJ, in which MI also gets a mention. Rest assured, I'll be including commentary on the current debacle.

Let's hope that this represents Radio 3 just pausing for breath, rather than giving up on anything like radical programming. GIven the other developments across the network it's hard to be optimistic.

Regards

Prof. David Clarke

David, you might like to dig around for information of what appears to be a forthcoming reduction in the time 'slot' for "Hear and Now", too. The concert recorded last night for broadcast  in March is sceduled to start at 22:30 and, from what I can make out, end at midnight. Hopefully I am wrong and it will run through to 01:00, but it looks worrying. You will need to listen in a quiet environemt when it is broadcast, by the way. Certainly one to bookmark.

Hello Mark,

Many thanks for your insight into the real story behind the untimely end of Mixing It on R3.

I would also like to echo all the fine words of appreciation from the contributors above  ... 16 great years of sonic adventures.

It was good to experience 'Mixing It - Live' when you were part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival back in 2001.

Perhaps at some point in the future you and Robert may re-consider the Podcast option, or a 'Podcast via subscription' service to cover the rights issue costs? I'm sure a "Maxing It" blog with mini discussion podcasts would work fine. Just an idea ...

All the Best, John Struthers

- I now fear for the future of Pangolins on Radio 3  Smiley

Yes, I'd support a podcast via subscription - I wonder how many folk it would take to make it viable. I would continue to urge Mixing It listeners to fight via the BBC Feedback and Complaints mechanism. If MI cannot be restored there will at least be a record of the disquiet surrounding not only it's demise but also the way in which it was taken off air which I think is quite disquieting. I don't want the public service broadcaster that I pay for treating those that I have a great deal of respect for in this quite appalling fashion.

Hey I've written that and managed to keep it polite......

Mark

your programme was one I listened to regularly, admittedly on LA usually.  I have some wonderful stuff, not legally  recorded of course.  Ahem

I think this whole thing is a travesty.

It appears that Hear & Now has definitely been trimmed by 30 minutes  Sad

I have only just seen this message from Robert Worby on the R3 MBs.  I hope he. and you, won't mind if I post it here although it is not about Mixing It.

The New Music Message Board was my idea. The message boards, on the Radio 3 website, began at about the same time as I began presenting ‘Hear And Now’ and I proposed that we have a message board to enable listeners to discuss contemporary music as these issues were often buried in the Classical Music Message Board. The idea was greeted with enthusiasm by senior Radio 3 staff and producers at the Radio 3 website. It took some considerable time for the board to establish itself because many listeners continued to post on the Classical Music Board. I’ve mentioned this board in every programme I’ve made and was pleased when it eventually established itself. For those of you in any doubt, I do read it regularly and so do others involved in programme making at Radio 3. As I always say in the programme, we are interested in what the listeners think about the music we broadcast. Radio 3 is currently undergoing considerable change and unfortunately the closure of this message board is part of the process of those changes. However, as I always say in the programme, please do send us an email at hear.and.now@bbc.co.uk

I have enjoyed many of the topics and discussions posted here and would like to thank everybody for their contributions.

Robert Worby
Presenter – Hear And Now

So let's keep mailing H&N and give them support.

I do wish they would archive Mixing It for a while ....

I used to tape things a lot, but it was hard to get to listen to them properly afterwards and frustrating when the tape became an obstacle rather than a vehicle. I have to say that every minute of broadcasting after midnight is worth only about half as much to me as a minute before. H&N going on till 1 am has always been a mixed blessing. One of the good things about Mixing It was that it was playing this eclectic mix containing unknown or unexpected gems at a reasonable hour. A minority we may be, but in this multichannel world such a thing should be possible, rather than more and more outlets for more samey commercial music. (Of which the Tchaikovsky Experience now seems an example.)

Anyway I'd like to join everyone else in sending Mark and Robert and the team my thanks for their achievements over the years, and I'm sick at what's happening now.

Agree with you Paul, ending at 1.00am H & N is also usually too late for me so tend to use LA.  You can record LA using Total Recorder or other gizmos, although the quality isn't great or you can time shift (I say that never having worked out how to use it!)

I just feel really sad about all this.  MI was an excellent programme.

Roger Wright comes across as a right arsehole. No wonder Mark Russell is so bitter. Shame BBC 6 Music (or even Radio 2) didn't snap the programme up. Yet another travesty.
