I didn't hear the broadcast (or the concert), but Ex-Member Barratt played the recording of Flechtwerk during a seminar this summer at a summer school we both were teaching at. It's an astounding piece. Hear it. (And Mr. Rosman's performance is equally impressive.)  Cool

Just finished listening to the broadcast.  Bravo Richard, the sound of  fOKT IV is now _so_ malleable - acoustic<->electric,
superb. I remembered, in another lifetime,  'Failed Experiment' at the ICA (1997 or so) which was, even then, making those connections.

Am I going mad? Is this edition of H&N in mono?
I checked with other R3 progs which are transmitting in stereo and it seems this edition of H&N is in mono. Can someone please prove me wrong, please?
This was less than satisfactory. Wink

Apropos Chris Dench. Too little of this composer on R3 these days. What about the orchestral works,
have they ever been recorded for R3, or have I just missed them?

Too little of this composer everywhere if you ask me (and I know you didn't). To me it's ridiculous that things like afterimages and énoncé aren't out there in the world. I do believe they exist in radio recordings though. (I do have a couple of énoncés on the shelf somewhere...)

At least some of the solos and recent chamber things are on NMC. Still, those old large-ensemble pieces are a joy. blue sheep, are you there?  Wink

Well, the stereo/mono question depends on what method you used to receive it. FM was stereo, and had fairly good spacial definition. The DAB version used joint (intensity) stereo, which is basicaly static mono for the low frequencies and panned mono for the higher frequency bands, the degree of panning for each band of around 1.5kHz depending on the relative stregth of the left and right signals in the original, i.e. not really stereo in the sense of two channels giving a clearly defined stage image at all.

Too right! Wink
Afterimages is wonderful. I often take a tape, yes tape, of Afterimages and  énoncé  with me when I travel.
I love those pieces.

hey Bryn,
I used the beeb's listen again. (on computer).
They usually transmit two distinct L+R channels. I can't see or hear anything like that.
I'm continuing checking my computer for errors, but seeing that other R3 progs are transmitting R+L
I take it it's not my error, weird.
