the London Sinfonietta has an impressive list of past commissions (especially from the Michael Vyner years) so i was pleased to hear that Finnissy's Alongside is being revived.
since the premiere:
Oliver Knussen conducted it as part of the Almeida Festival and more recently Ensemble Corrente (with Ian Pace tackling the tricky piano part with aplomb)at the Conway Hall.

It is fantastic that this piece is being revived (hope that the trumpeter is sent his part sufficiently early!), of seminal importance within Finnissy's output, a peak in terms of the development of his music in the 1970s (after which he moved in other directions). The first performance of this should be marked as significant event in the recent history of British music - I believe Dillon, Dench, Barrett, Emsley and Clarke were all there (and doubtless numerous others) and various of them have suggested that hearing this work was a revelation, not really knowing that this composer was in their midsts. It's not hard to see how this type of writing influenced early works by all of these composers. I hope the Sinfonietta will be able to find the budget to record it as well. However, I believe this is the first time they have played anything of Finnissy for over 20 years (if I'm wrong on this, do someone correct me)?

It would be great if Richard could say a bit more about the atmosphere at the first performance of alongside.

Ian:it's hard to imagine Alongside without the final onslaught (32 bars of 4/4 marked fff) yet originally the piece finished at the preceeding drum solo-the composer apparently realised the piece was a few minutes short of the requested length so quickly composed the final stretch!

I wonder if he'd ever consider its being played in the earlier version? That ending is very spectacular, but is something of a rather 'obvious' way to end such a piece. The dissolution of all that has gone before, leaving only that terrifying knell of the drum (please, LS percussionist, if you're reading this, don't hold back on those!), could be an even more arresting ending.

I think the LS (or 3 of its members) played In Stiller Nacht for piano trio at least once a few years ago - may even have toured it. Not a major work though; terrific about Alongside, when is it begin done?

ian:but sometimes the obvious is a good thing and i really wouldn't want alongside to be *without* the final section on any account - - -the balance is anything but obvious, with the piano part (at its most demanding here) practically obliterated by the brass/wind and percussion.

So... how was it?

And I heard somewhere about a Finnissy concert in London this Saturday. There must be someone here who knows the pieces being played...?
