Ho.
I've recently been considering seriously setting things up so that I can be properly self-published.
I've also been approached by a couple of people who might be interested in me publishing their work (one of them has survived as a freelance composer for some years).
Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions regarding this?

Are you talking about producing "hard" copies or downloadable scores?

At the moment, I'm principally thinking about hard copies.
But now you come to mention it...
Erm. Don't know.

My experiences (good and bad) of making recordings are that the critical thing is how well connected the record company is - there are plenty of people recording stuff, and doing it well, but not so many do the important business side anywhere near so well - distribution, publicity, getting a recognisable identity - basically, getting the product "out there".

Get that sorted and you're well away - I'm sure the same applies as much to music publishing as CD publishing.

Don't know if that helps, but there it is!

Yes - most of what was once the preserve of publishing and CD companies can now be done from home by anyone with a reasonable degree of fluency in certain software. Publishing is more about promotion than anything else, and publishers are more like agents - the question in seeking a publisher is whether you think they can help push your work to people that you wouldn't be able to successfully access on your own.

I've received a fair number of self-published scores whose layout, print and binding qualities, etc., exceed those from some commercial publishers.
