Since the topic of "classical music as a ringtone" cropped-up elsewhere, I thought it might be worth discussion?

We don't have Polls enabled on the boards (probably luckily), but when you hear snippets of "Carmen", "Nutcracker", "The Flight Of The Bumblebee" etc as ringtones, would you describe your reaction as

  • resigned, weary acceptance of the inevitable
  • mild irritation
  • suppressed anger
  • unrestrained anger
  • "Dies irae, dies illa...."

Apparently the annoying tinkles your Windows-XT computer makes when switched-on/off, or frustrated by some unexpected event, were actually composed by Brian Eno.  Is "composing" beeps, bloops and rings something composers should get involved in - if only, perhaps, to stop some nerdy Dilbert or Wally sequencing their favourite chunk of Bruckner to use instead?

Many phones now (of which mine is one) have the ability to use mp3s as ringtones, alarm signals and the like, as well as to speak to computers. I admit I've nicked snippets of Messiaen, Schumann, Weber, Barrett and the like to use for various such purposes. Someone called me a tosser for doing that on the old boards though so I'm a bit hesitant to go into the details...  Undecided

How rude!

Even snippets of pieces of music you like are better than the anonymous and ubiquitous nokia type ringtones.  Carmen annoys me intensely, but most other bits of classical music out a smile on my face.

Well if your pda/phone can do mp3s and bluetooth perhaps we can find an occasion for me to pass on my snippets...  Wink

Ok.  I am as technically minded as the next man.

Sadly, he is an idiot.

... and apparently he composed them using a Macintosh. Make of that what you will.

Not sure if i've got the right diddle um, BobbyZ, but this one:

diddle-Um-dum diddle-Um-dum diddle-Um-Dum Dummm

is actually from a guitar piece by Tarrega! I believe it was arranged and copyrighted by a certain well-known Finnish clarinettist, who as a result is now very rich (though if I was rich I don't think I'd spend my money commissioning pieces from Magnus Lindberg ...).

Sounds as if that's the one t-i-n !

One advantage of the myriad of other annoying ones is we don't hear that at all now.

reiner, that was a bit one-sided. Why not include "mild amusement" or "delightful anticipation" as choices?  Wink

I have the latter when I hear Chopin's Fantasie-Impromptu Op 66 as it means someone's calling ME!  Grin
