Apparently they are going to ban the drinking of alchol in public places like bars, restaurant and pubs as booze can cause liver damage.

Yes and you can be fined £500 !!!

Many cities have this bye-law. It does, though, refer not to liver damage but to behaviour when drinking in the street  Roll Eyes

for example

Does anybody really believe that drunks who might behave badly on the street after drinking on the street are going to behave more appropriately after getting drunk indoors somewhere, then leaving for the great outdoors?

Kitty, are you a townie or a country person?

The bye law was/is successful for at least two reasons:

1. removal of tramps drinking from bottles in the inner-city parks, who can become aggressive and disruptive

2. vast reduction in fights resulting in injuries where persons were stabbed with broken glasses and bottles.

Do you see Kitty how the bye-law is very useful?

In my time, I've been both. I can see that the bye-law has its uses but my opinions on alcohol in general and alcohol+testosterone will probably get me in trouble if I say any more.

there is a pub on the corner of my street; which is used as a place to pee poo and puke as well as poke. fighting about once a month only tho, more often up by the take aways.
kids drinking outdoors because they are not allowed indoors. it is no longer just the boys, the girls are at it just as much now.

this in a rather quiet smallish country town with no slums etc, just the great british weekend.

In lots of towns /cities these days drink is not allowed on the streets. Manchester introduced this a while ago and it has made everywhere safer. At least you are not likely to get hit on the head by a glass bottle!

The 'whatever men do in corners' scenario has also lessened so I would thoroughly endorse anything which keeps people from staggering about with bottles of alcohol out of my face !!

Only Tescos have the answer. Every little ban helps.

No, not quite. They don't make a profit out of selling bans. They sell booze. So, every little drop helps.

Anyway, are you sure that an M T Wessel is a credible arbiter of such matters?(!)...

Best,
