James Purnell. Looked him up on the net but no information of much interest. Lists his interests as film, music, theatre and football ( does he have a gsoh ? ) Doesn't seem to have done anything in life except for politics. Was involved in some parts of a BBC review. Probably won't make any difference to policy ? ( such as it is )

Here's his Wicki entry (which someone has already updated today). I notice he's, aaaaargh, 36. Oops, forgot the link... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Purnell

I bumped into him a bit when he was one of the Special Advisers in No 10, with particular responsibility for Culture, Media and Sport stuff (before he became a Minister). He seemed amiable enough, less combative than some of the other Special Advisers, and knew his stuff. I have a feeling it will probably be 'more of the same' at the DCMS but possibly with fewer embarrassing gaffes and liabilities.

A Kulcher Secretary "interested in music"? Shome mishtake, shurely?... Probably won't make any difference to policy ? ( such as it is )
If "probably" can be twisted into synonymity with "certainly", then yes... Best, Alistair

Well, I imagine in this particular context that it's probably something of which I'm told there was quite a lot "presented" at the heavily attended concert for Diana the other day; in fact, I understand that the duration of the entire event was greater than that of a performance of Sorabji's Opus Clavicembalisticum, so the very thought that such a large group of people can sit and concentrate for so long on it surely goes to show just how kulchered we've already become in this country in these enlightened days... Best, Alistair

Bit of a government loyalist by the look of things. Obviously not a very good one if they lumbered him with Culture...

Hm. I notice he voted 'moderately against' a transparent parliament. How do you do that, anyway?

Remember it's not just Culture, the job description is Culture Sports and Media.
Andy Burnham is the honorary Chairman of Leigh Rugby League Club and a supporter of Everton Football Club. Burnham was a talented junior cricketer and keen footballer, and competed at both sports for his College. He still plays for the House of Commons Football Team. He also had a year on The Football Task Scheme (whatever that is). Read English at Cambridge. Joined the Party aged 14 during the Miners Strike. Guess he'll be good on the Sports part of the job then.

Well, that's just smashing The cultural budget's been ransacked to pay for the Olympics, and they've put a sports bloke in charge now the money's been reallocated.

In October 2007 he stated that: "I think it’s better when children are in a home where their parents are married" Andy Burnham married Marie-France Van Heel in 2000 after some years of cohabitation, and their son attended the wedding Van Heel, a former MTV presenter, is the Head of Marketing for Littlewoods Pools

Blimey. Reminds me of the early days of the Scottish Parliament when New Labour appointed a series of fitba'* nuts to look after the same portfolio. They hardly even mentioned the Arts for a few years. Why do they lump sport together with culture? I know the term 'Culture' is supposed to include more than the Arts - and sport can be seen as part of the 'culture' - but very few people I have met are knowledgeable about/interested in both the Arts and Sport...and I don't think it's very different for ministers. I think Sport should have its own department, with a separate department for Arts and Media. *(that's football/soccer to you depending on nationality )
