I have the impression that the publication of scare stories about our supposedly violent society is used far more in the UK than in other countries to sell newspapers and feed a sense of paranoia

I'm afraid the UK media don't have a monopoly on this sort of thing. At least not if what I've heard from the USA and experienced in Australia is any guide. That does on the other hand suggest a certain correlation with l'anglophonie - without of course wanting to point the finger at one person in particular...
