Wonder if we'll be having one this year?

Personally, I think it unlikely.....what with the Tories drawing level in the polls last week and the prospect of a dark and gloomy autumn looming, with the attendant issue of achieving voter turn-out in Labour-held inner city areas, it all seems a bit pie in the sky.

And there's the rather more serious fact that there is no reason whatsoever to call an election other than to satisfy Gordon Brown's desire for his own mandate.

Yet expectations have already been raised and the decision may actually have been made some weeks ago.

What do we think?

FWIW this 'we' thinks there are important constitutional arguments for having a general election within a reasonably short time of a new Prime Minister taking over. This business of being able to change horses in mid-stream without the electorate being invited to have a say seems pretty dubious to me on constitutional grounds alone.

But then I'm not that wild about the convention of Prime Ministers being able to choose their own moment to make a bolt for it anyway and think there are strong arguments for moving to fixed term administrations  -  so that makes me at least twice removed from current reality. Cheesy

Funny, I see it completely the opposite way around - I'm pretty certain Brown is perfectly satisfied with his own mandate (or otherwise); it's everybody else who'd like it clarified...

Of course - which is why there's no need for an election; what I was getting at is that if there is any question mark over Brown's premiership, he's the last person asking those questions!

Which year? Apparently, Gordian Browbeater has not only ruled out a UK General Election this year but also next year other than in "exceptional circumstances"; I imagine that he wants to leave it as near the last minute (2010) as he can before embarking on the first of his proposed four full terms, which would take us to 2030 and him to his late 70s. Hmmm...

Best,

Alistair
