Perhaps the neighbour should go out and get a job. My neighbour is a clarinettist of sorts - I can't imagine how she has the patience to play so many scales, but I don't mind her doing it.

Good to see that Manchester City Council aren't losing their touch.

Indeed - so much not so that they probably think that Mark Elder (assuming that they've ever even heard of him) ought to set an example, since he is in a position of authority as the orchestra's principal conductor and makes no noise at all when wielding his baton...

What a depressing article and set of follow-up comments. What aggression there is in the responses of Joe Public. That is a true reflection of our times, I fear, and makes all the bickering of earlier this week on here seem (a) civilised and (b) a gnat bite on the skin of a much more important problem - what on earth is going to change this embedded attitude.

One thread that seems to have been left in midair at the weekend was about audience building. When there is such an apparent HATRED of culture, how does one begin to address changing attitudes?

(I actually know the couple in question, and a gentler pair you could not imagine. Not relevant, perhaps, but speaking personally they are in sharp contrast to some of the nasty posts on that messageboard.

I think I might just copy and paste this onto the MEN board...

When in doubt, wash.

When I was at school I was friends with a girl whose family was taken to court for the children practising their musical instruments (clarinet, violin etc - not drums). They lost the case, appealed, and ended up with a massive legal bill and very restricted practising times (or possibly banned altogether, my memory's hazy, it was about 30 years ago). Funnily enough their surname was the same as one of the violinists.

[I appreciate that our neighbours are very kind, tolerating my 14 year old's drumming. It drives me mad although he's very good. It's the cymbals I really find intolerable after a while!]

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Get him a silent electronic drum kit so he can play away to his heart's content on his headphones.

And give them silent electronic violins, right?

Update on this story - the two musicians have now announced they will leave the apartment after the way this matter was dealt with:
