Great. There is a retired vicar of a similar age who recently started a performing degree at the Laban Centre, encouraged by his daughters. He spoke in an unaffected way, as you'd expect, about movement and a broad spirituality. This was a 'something understood' hosted by the clearly lovely Felicity Finch, Ruth in the Archers, who should be offered a gig on R3 asap imho. I'll come clean and say I used to hoof about in a mens' group some years ago,cue much hooting from my ex when she came to meet me at the door. To my mind its about reaching an age when you can legitimately care less about what you look like and feel the rythmn.

Ballet is rather an extreme form of exercise if done seriously - but good for him. It's certainly more interesting than going to the gym or jogging. Like him, I have never understood why it's considered "effeminate". It would do most males a power of good.

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

And most females, so I've been told.  I've never had a ballet lesson in my life, but as it happens I've enrolled in a 12-week course of beginners' classes starting in April Smiley

That's terrific, Ruth! I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Do keep us posted when you start - I'm really interested in the idea of adult beginners, who I don't think existed when I was young. I did it as a child and teenager, not since.

I went to an adult class for many years here (although it wasn't beginners).  I only stopped because the teacher got religion in a big way.  Born again with a vengeance!  It was God with every plié.  The final straw came when I got a note through my door inviting me to "come to the studio on Tuesday when salvation will be offered."  It was such a shame because the six of us who went had all enjoyed it so much.  Two of them were Jewish anyway and the rest of us weren't exactly pillars of any faith..... Roll Eyes

There are a few adult beginner classes in this area for ballet/tap/jazz.  Our problem was that there wasn't the standard for people who'd gone past that stage.  I did suggest that we just carry on ourselves and we did for a while in each other's houses but that of course wasn't ideal.  Then two of them moved away and we disbanded.  I still do exercises myself at home but I would love to go to a class again.  I have a German friend who used to be a soloist many years ago with the Berlin Opera Ballet.  She came over and for three weeks we worked together.  It was really wonderful for me to have some lessons from a top professional - not that I would have been in her league had I done it for another 50 years!!!  Grin
