He's going to fight a by-election in his (safe-ish) North Yorkshire seat, to highlight the threat posed to personal liberty by Gordon Brown's 42-day terror proposals.

Kelvin McKenzie (ex-editor) of the Sun - is said to be '90% certain' to stand against him.

I can't decide whether Davis is brave or just stupid - or, possibly, a combination of both.

A novel idea, though, for a Tory to stand as the champion of freedom and liberty against the dark and malign forces of 'security'.   Wink

Not unheard of though - it was Churchill's govt that repealed ID cards after WWII.

There's more on Davis in the "Do we have any news today" thread.

The story of the end of wartime ID cards can be found here:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/3129302.stm

It suggests that the wartime system, although generally tolerated (it was linked to the rationing system, which caused a lot more angst), was expensive, bureaucratic, and didn't work.

In stark contrast to what is being suggested now, of course.

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)
