Darling defends economy warning

Chancellor defends his decision to 'level' with people

The chancellor has insisted it is his duty to be straight with the public, after telling a newspaper the UK faces its worst economic crisis in 60 years.

Alistair Darling told the Guardian the downturn would be more "profound and long-lasting" than most had feared.

You mean it's the Opium Wars all over again and Victoria's our Queen? Or did you mean the 1730s?

"Worst economic crisis for 60 years". Er, doesn't that make it 1948 ? Or is there something seriously wrong with my maths ?

I am indeed extremely glad I decided to rent, instead of stretching my finances to almost breaking point by buying a house, when I moved back to London last year.

Somebody lost a flat tent worth £40,000? Well where did you see it last?
cf.
Did you find the tent?
Yes, it was in the last place I looked for it though.
Really? I would have carried on looking just in case it turned up somewhere else as well... Roll Eyes

Darling is an amateur and a fool.

He has also, by using 'informal' language, managed to devalue the office he holds.  I never expected to see a 'strong language' warning on an interview with the Chancellor of the Exchequer, but these are the times we live in.

His statement has had an effect that he could have predicted: the City has gone into meltdown and things are now worse, rather than better, for his attempt at 'honesty'.

If Brown had any authority, he would sack him immediately.  But he hasn't.  Nor has he any sense of timing.

This government seems determined to linger on into obsolescence long before its destruction at the polls in 2010.

We shoot fatally wounded animals.  Would that we could do the same with governments.

"it is the 30s again"

"worst economic crisis in 60 years"

I really hope this isn't our dear Chancellor's arithmetic in action.
