Birmingham has three of the country's ugliest buildings, which include the Bullring and the Central Library, according to a recent survey.

see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7670590.stm

This is a pic of the Central Library I took in December 2006. It's difficult not to call it ugly.

I think it would look quite nice if it was gleaming white...  Lips sealed

So many huge concrete buildings look as if they were designed by somebody playing with the most basic set of Lego bricks imaginable (but all in grey).

Reminds me of UC Berkeley's Wurster Hall. Its function is as the architecture school, but the name seems to suggest that it's a sausage factory.

Yes! It's funny how, when architects run out of ideas, things gastronomic suddenly become "the thing" isn't it?

Here is a famous London building known as "The Gherkin"...

...while here is another famous London building that (surely!) was influenced by the blancmange ( Grin)...

I don't think we have any "sausages" over here yet - but am fully "up" for persuasion!

Once upon a time I lived in the shadow of this

(The Television Tower in Žižkov [Prague]).

Apart from now having two heads both of which suffer nightmares, I'm fine. No lasting effects.

What (and where) is that? I can't recall seeing it. Are we south of the river looking east or north of the river looking west?

It's City Hall, IRF. South of the river looking east. I rather like it. And I'm a gherkin fan, for sure.  Cool

Which river would that be, the River Rea? Cheesy

I really must protest, everyone is going frightfully off topic. Moderators, can you set up a separate thread for each city in the world? Wink

Brum certainly has many ugly buildings - though in the case of these which I took on Christmas Day 2005, I should say "had" since 2 of the 4 towers have since been demolished, the 2 furthest away standing empty ready for demolition, and the 2 low rise blocks in the foreground have gone as well. Nothing has replaced them yet.

Leeds has some fairly ugly buildings too - brutalist tower blocks on the outskirts etc.

Oh yes! Now wasn't that when they had to import specialist Irish demolition experts? If you listen carefully to this link, you can tell from the "countdown" just what a scientific business such demolition has to be!!   Grin Grin Grin   Grin Grin Grin   Grin Grin Grin

Yes. Well. Er. Perhaps The Gherkin and The Blancmange are meant to represent the Western Economies in a before and after the crash like sort of way, like sort of styley thingy style.
Regards.
