Can we avoid the tempers rising now, and not get anywhere near wild words?

Many thanks

Tommo

Tommo, I would second that wholeheartedly.

So (wearily) would I, Mort. It would be nice to think that members could learn from past incidents and modify their behaviour accordingly, but sadly... no. Doubtless, if things carry on at this rate, you and I will spend yet another fraught weekend trying to sort things out and placate the various parties.

<sigh>.

I don't think you and Mort should need to do this Ron. Nobody in their right mind could possibly question our Richard's right to express his views in his way just as the said Irving did his views in his way. The difference was one of economy: DI spent an entire Eurostar journey offending his nearby passengers, while RB discharged his feelings in merely half a moment. (Nice one Richard!)

I do not feel that Mrs Kerfoops could argue with that, and I do not expect to see any attempt upon her part to do so!

When "reason" takes over, a far more telling response from Richard would be this: why not write a composition to be performed publicly (even broadcast perhaps?) in which the "inspiration" (i.e. the Brief Encounter mentioned) is laid bare in all the programme notes and details? I have always thought that composers speak infinitely more eloquently through their music than through their fists.

Let me make one thing clear. Nowhere did I "boast" about my behaviour or admit to being proud of it. As HtoHe says, it's very easy to ponder at one's leisure what one might do in a situation like this, and I could think of a dozen "better" ways of dealing with this particular one within half an hour of it happening. I merely felt a need to say something about the incident, which affected me profoundly, and start a conversation about it. (I should also point out that David Irving most certainly associates regularly with people who become far more violent on far less provocation than I could ever do, and for what I would dare to suggest are far less excusable grounds.)

I've said what I had to say about the Grew/Kerfoops troll and I shall merely ignore it/them from now on. I regard this behaviour as unacceptable, however tedious and repetitive it might be for the moderation team as autoharp sagely indicates.

Good idea, Richard. You have better things to do.

Let Mme. 'Oops talk to herself. She needs to be ignored on a more universal basis, I think.

Indeed Turfers. Perhaps a very light diet for Mrs K may be beneficial for all ...

Thank you, Richard. Well said.

But I still find it very strange that suggesting that you are mentally disturbed is allowed on this message board and calling Sydney Grew and XXX XXXXX is not allowed.

I'm seriously thinking of leaving this message board for good.

If you leave, Sydney Grew wins. He will only be happy to see you go. Do you really want that?

Please stay. The mods are not your enemy. They will tend to the complaint from richard in due time.

If I may ... I don't think Mrs Kerfoops' comments were anything other than highly inappropriate, and out of order both in their apparent intention to make mischief and also in their insensitivity to the unpleasant experience which Richard had recounted.

On the other hand I don't think Richard needed Pim Derks to defend him, and if Pim Derks thinks he was doing anything other than using Richard as a shield behind which to pursue his own personal vendetta against Sydney Grew, then Pim Derks is - in my humble opinion and in that of others with whom I've discussed the issue this afternoon - sorely misled.

Using such terms to describe any member of the board is a direct attack, and thus contrary to the rules, Pim. It's abuse, pure and simple, and if left unchecked will escalate rapidly. When individual members start trying to take matters into their own hands and attempting some sort of vigilante action, it only succeeds in upsetting far more people, damaging others' enjoyment and adversely affecting the board for days.

We really should be above hurling playground taunts at each other, no matter what the provocation.

Quite so TF, the person calling themself Grew/Kerfoops has only been back for 11 days and has already succeeded in stirring up another hornet's nest. I seem to remember some people were actually posting "come back" when he/she apparently stormed off before Huh

But, of course, it's a waste of time asking people to ignore troublemakers Sad

I am one of the people who was asking SG to come back. Just because I believe it's wise to ignore much of what he/she says doesn't mean I think he/she should feel unwelcome here. Everyone's a misfit in some way or other, not excluding me or Andy D.

holocaust-denying pseudohistorian

Not even a pseudo-historian.  There is only one reason for trying to deny what is one of the most thoroughly-documented events in history.

I have a lot of sympathy with Richard's reaction - although I'm not sure I would have done it myself, I probably would just have sat and fumed, or asked to be moved. But there are some individuals - of whom Irving is certainly one - who manage to put themselves beyond the pale of decency, and yet claim rights of free speech to continue to provoke and push their lies.

(Incidentally, I too was travelling out to Brussels by Eurostar yesterday afternoon, but my journey was much less eventful.)
