I don't expect this thread to provoke much comment, since it is obvious (particularly at a time when America is so chuffed about all men being created equal) that Proposition 8 is a despicable and shaming piece of legislation, but this video is worth watching just to push the point home:

Er . . . there is a difference though, in that few homosexualists are particularly interested in the institution of marriage. Old Mr. Grew my neighbour was telling me that just the other day. He said they are in general much more interested in promiscuity. Among heterosexualists I estimate eighty per centum yearn for the married state. Among homosexualists perhaps twenty-five per centum. So the real need is the abolition of the concepts of "marriage" and the "family" altogether we think; until that day comes there can be no true "equality" can there.

I respectfully disagree, Mrs K - allowing homosexual marriage shouldn't affect those who don't want to marry (just as it shouldn't affect heterosexuals who don't want to marry). Now, if your point is that the exaltation of marriage by the state (through tax breaks and other benefits, eg) leaves those who choose not to marry feeling like second-class citizens, then that is a valid argument, but not one covered in the debate around Proposition 8.

I believe that many of the issues involved in opposition to this vile piece of legislation turn on the legal rights of spouses (viz taxation, inheritance, medical intervention, property law, etc) rather than the more humdrum business of intimate relations.

The principle of "equality" enshrined in the Constitution has been diced and minced here Sad

Presumably with the approval of a state governor well-versed in dicing and mincing?
