Rejections for British Visas are at a record high.  My friend's 12-year-old daughter was rejected for a visa to attend a Summer School in stagecraft, singing & dancing in musicals, makeup etc (London is regarded as the "Number One" place for musicals).  The reason given was "inability to demonstrate ability to support herself financially during her stay", despite a fax from the School confirming that her flight ticket, tuition, accommodation and board were prepaid.  Grown men in $2000 suits were seen emerging from the Visa Department and kicking the walls of the building in frustration.
