I'm not a big jazz fan but Joe Z is a name from my youth listening to Miles, Weather Report etc  I've dug out 'In a Silent Way' for afternoon listening.

I thought I'd post this here because, though I heard the news on the 0900 Radio 4 bulletin, it doesn't seem to have been repeated and there is, as yet, nothing on the BBC online news - unless it's very carefully hidden.

Thanks for all the good work, Joe.

For an erstwhile addict of his work with Weather Report and with Miles in particular, that's very sad news indeed. Unmistakable, quirky and highly inventive playing style.  Sad

That's terrible news, a Jazz keyboardist friend of mine who studied with him for about 2 years (I think.. ?) told me that despite many (other jazzers mostly) considering him to be merely crazy, he was extremely  clued up & interesting to have worked with.

Indeed, very sad news. A wonderful musician who seemed to bring an instinctive lilt and verve to every track he played on. Weather Report is now spinning.

Radio 4 seems, better late than never I suppose, to have got its act together and included a short piece on JZ in Friday's 'Last Word' programme, which is repeated at 2030 today.

I've been away on hols, far, far from radio and even news, so I hadn't heard. A truly great musician - eclectic, imaginative.

I agree, although I think he may have been influenced by Stevie Wonder in this regard.
