Broadcaster, wit, bon-viveur and stage-director Ned Sherrin has died.

In a musical context he staged several idiosyncratic productions of G&S, including an IOLANTHE (at the QEH) which updated the story to cover the demands then current (in the 1980s) to abolish the House Of Lords,  and had performance as Strephon that strongly hinted at "Red Ken".   He was also a great fan and proponent of musicals of the more intelligent kind, and a vast source of knowledge on the Sondheim repertoire, for which he was a one-man ambassador.
