The German composer and pianist Hans Otte died on Christmas Day at the age of 81.

I read the news on the site of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ):

A friend, knowing of my interest in things minimalist + postminimalist pointed me towards Das Buch der Klange a few years back. I was most unimpressed. What have I missed? Or should I have chosen something else?

Perhaps you should have chosen the music of Simeon ten Holt, autoharp? Wink

Not to be confused with Simon Holt. Wink

Got StH's "Solodevilsdance IV" spinning as I type. Not quite up to Autoharp standard, but there's a certain superficial similarity to a virtuous flowery piece I happen to know.

It's a very great shame to hear of Otte's death (he had, though, been quite unwell for some time). Alas I never got chance to interview him (which I very much wanted to as part of my current research). I do hope there will be some more interest in other of his works as well as Das Buch der Klänge (wonderful though that is).

I have! I was given a recording of  Canto ostinato in the early 1980s, but didn't really pursue an interest until a few years back. Incantatie IV is the favourite - I seem to prefer him im the minor mode . . . any other recommendations, Pim?

Bryn - I have it on good authority that the virtuous flowery piece which you mention contains a section which deliberately alludes to a certain Terry Riley rather than Simeon ten Holt. I imagine that "flower power" may be something to do with this?

Anyway, back to Herr Otte and his Werke.

Autoharp, the virtuosic Riley connection had not exactly escaped my attention, as you well know. However, the superficial similarity I was referring to is more to the later piece than to the Riley being paid tribute to in it. I regret to say that I found "Solodevilsdance IV" a bit saccharine for my taste, as it progressed. That's something I have not found with the delicately flavoured nectar from virtuous flowers. It's the bee's knees, indeed. Wink

I only know III - how does that compare?
