This has just been announced on the News. I couldn't believe my ears. Terribly sad.

Still had to rummage around there to find it, Mort:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7302841.stm

it appears that the death of the actor who played the original Captain Birdseye deserves higher billing....

Having seen none of his movies other than Truly Madly, nor his Butterfly, my view of Minghella is perhaps different to most: I remember him mainly for his work for radio, original or adapted, particularly the play Two Planks and a Passion, which I hope R3 might revive as a memorial. It's sad to see busy talented people die at that sort of age, and sobering to realise that he was younger than me, which I was not aware of previously.

 Sad news, indeed, Ron.

Anthony Minghella's career was well covered on News 24 at 18.30 hrs and I've just heard, following P on 3, that his career will also be discussed on Night Waves, today, at 21.45 hrs.

Very sad news when someone dies so young with so much still to offer the world of cinema and, indeed, the stage. His life was remembered in some depth on BBC's South Today, as he came from the Isle of Wight.
