I don't think we have yet marked the passing of one of the great enthusiasts earlier this month.

A few press obituaries:

Thanks, George. I had no idea! An inspiring, provocative and eccentric writer and teacher with occasionally dubious opinions. I know so many old York students who say he opened their eyes and ears to an awful lot. He was one of those types, for sure.

Back in the 1960s, Music in a new found land was about the sum total of easily accessed info about 20th century USA music.

I hope Yeibichai (1969 proms) gets repeated one day. Absolutely bonkers piece.

It's very sad to read of the death of such a towering figure.  I had read the obituaries in the Guardian and Independent and I was puzzled that no mention was made of the huge importance of his book, Caliban Reborn. When I was a student in the late 60s/early 70s, it was a book which was always being referred to. Mentioning it in an essay or seminar was worth huge amounts of brownie points!  It was good to see that The Times gave it the mention it deserved.

And, of course, he shattered the complacency  of the music establishment by being one of the first to apply a scholarly approach to the music of the Beatles!
