Well...it was 1935

Newsnight has profiled Sydney Pollack who died of cancer today.

He used his diverse talents as director (mainly) but also as a natural screen actor:

This Property Is Condemned (1966), The Swimmer (1968), They Shoot Horses Don't They?(1969), The Way We Were (1973), Tootsie (director and actor) (1982), Out of Africa (1985), The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989) - perhaps my favourite, along with Tootsie.

   RIP Sidney Pollack

I associate many of Sydney Pollack's movies with music. When I heard of Pollack's death for instance, I had to think of John Barry's score for Out of Africa. I listened to my old LP recording of the film music a few days ago. The first version of The Way We Were that I heard was sung by Shirley Bassey and this version has a special place in my heart. I hope she will recover quickly after last week's surgery.

RIP Sydney Pollack

Richard Brooks in his 'Biteback' column in today's Sunday Times writes:

That great man of the screen, Sydney Pollack, has died.   A rarity in that he was
a very talented director, producer and actor.   There is also a sad irony: he and
Anthony Minghella, who also died recently, made classy movies through their company,
        Mirage Enterprises.

At the Cannes Film Festival several years ago, I bumped into Pollack at the entrance
of the Majestic.   I asked him questions, half-expecting a snub or an intervention by a minder,
but he happily chatted away.   As the glowing obituaries show, decent guys in an often nasty
movie business get the press they justly deserve.
