I am shocked. My first reaction to the headline was, "I didn't realise he was that old"... then I saw that he wasn't old at all. A tragedy  Cry

I don't listen to much jazz but I came across Esbjorn Svensson's music a few years ago and really admired it.

Indeed, R.I.P. Esbjorn...I became aware of this group, years back, through their exposure on the BBC.

Thankfully, I saved onto mini-disk each subsequent concert on the BBC.

Despite the predictable ragging(s) by the Jazz Board pundits who just don't get Scandi jazz.

Yes, v.sad news. I was a bit shocked by some of the posts over on the other board to be honest. That seemed to go beyond ragging to just being offensive in a sub teenage John Lydon kind of manner. I can understand that some may find EST's music a little anodyne but jeez, Louise...

Listening to the title track of Somewhere Else Before, Esbjorn (with some

unbelievably quiet brush strokes underneath + bass) seems suspended in time...as

if hestitating for what is to follow - in the temporal world itself.

Been listening to the Jazz on 3 tribute programme yesterday and today. Didn't know EST before. I've enjoyed the programme though they're a little too consistently laid back for me, despite some definite signs of animation in the last piece "Behind The Yashmak".

Yes, that makes sense to me. And I don't see anything wrong with that at all  Smiley

is rock music ok>?

well it depends whether or not you see pop music
as the root of all evil and largely instrumental
in the collapse of the high/low boundary
feeding the capitalist machine
and desttroying serious art

I'd agree that substance was occasional and (as crits have noted) there wasn't much rythmnic diversity, but( my hunch is that) at the very least EST bridged the generation gap in Scandi-jazz consciousness now that the luminaries are knocking on a bit, ensuring the survival of the genre. I like the thought of EST having been on MTV over there. RIP to a well-intentioned geezer.

Is that a tanned Johnny Dankworth or Anthony Howard 3rd from right front row? What do they sound like KK?
