Well...it was 1935

« on: 00:28:42, 18-06-2008 »

Cyd Charisse has died, aged 86.       She spanned the 1940s/50, usually in MGM musicals, as a fine dancer with a sultry presence in 'Ziegfeld Follies' (1945), 'The Harvey Girls' (1946), 'Words & Music' (1948), Singin' In The Rain (1952), The Band Wagon' (1953) - the Dancing in the Dark sequence is one of my all time favourites - 'Brigadoon' (1954), 'It's Always Fair Weather' (1955) - sadly underrated - and 'Silk Stockings' (1957).    I recall seeing her at the Victoria Palace theatre in the mid-80s when she played in 'Charlie Girl', a slight musical, but London theatregoers gave her a huge ovation.

RIP   Cyd Charisse  - a real star

A great and versatile performer indeed - she leaves a fine legacy behind her.

Thank you so much, Pim, for those memorable links.   A real treat.

I usually get phone calls from a few friends who go a long way back with me but the death of Cyd Charisse has also brought e-mail tributes from Vancouver and Cairo.   A sure sign of international recognition.   I must now sort out the off-airs and DVDs for a C.C. Festival at the weekend.

She may have kicked the bucket, but she did it with style

I dreamed last night that I was talking to a woman about Chyd Charisse and her career. I never saw this woman before and the place where I met her (a park) was also unknown to me. Huh

A case of Rodgers & Hart's 'Where or When', Pim?

"It seems we stood and talked like this before,
We looked at each other in the same way then
But I can't remember where or when.
The clothes you're wearing are the clothes you wore,
The smile you are smiling you were smiling then,
But I can't remember where or when.
Some things that happen for the first time
               Seem to be happening again.
And so it seems that we have met before,
And laughed before, and loved before,
But who knows where or when!

When you're awake, the things you think
Comes from the dreams you dream.
Thought has wings, and lots of things
               Are seldom what they seem.
Sometimes you think you've lived before
               All that you live today.
Things you do come back to you,
As though they knew the way.
Oh, the tricks your mind can play!

                        REPEAT REFRAIN

Lena Horne sang these brilliant lyrics in her one-woman show at the Adelphi Theatre, in London, in the mid 80s.     I can still hear her now!

Sweet dreams, Pim.    Smiley

Many thanks for that beautiful lyric, Stanley. Smiley

In the mid 80s Lena Horne was unknown to me. I'm glad she's still sharing the planet with us.
