I heard today that Bill Colleran died at the weekend after a long illness.

As the chairman of NMC Recordings (the capacity in which I knew him), as a publisher and in many other ways, he was a great champion of new music and I'm sure that some of you will have known him and appreciated his support (and his dry humour).

RIP Bill.

Sad news indeed, BS. I didn't know him, but he was legendary in the new music biz for his energy and unstinting support of new music and composers' careers. I think he helped Birtwistle quite a bit along the way.

RIP

Yes, Bill had known Birtwistle for years as he used to be at Universal Edition.

Have only just caught up with this very sad news via the Guardian obituary.

Bill was my boss at UE for a number of years.  We had a strange relationship, and he could be irascible on occasion, but he had a sparkling wit under the often urbane surface, and I never doubted the real strength of his commitment to the best of modern music.  In this respect he was an inspiration, and my real regret is that I didn't maintain contact with him in later years.  I bumped into him at the Birtwistle festival on the South Bank in 2004 and he looked very happy.  But I know how deeply hurt he felt when UE decided to ditch its contemporary composers from the London stable.

Here are some obituaries that have only relatively recently appeared:

RIP Bill, a great champion of the best in new music.
