I just read on the WDR 3 website that the German conductor Horst Stein has died at the age of eighty:

http://www.wdr.de/radio/wdr3/kulturnachrichten.phtml#nachricht_483540

So far, the news hasn't reached Wikipedia:

I am such an ignoramus. It looks to me that he was probably mostly known to fans of Wagners operas.

Thank you for posting, pim_derks. I am sorry to hear that. RIP

The only time I went to Bayreuth Horst Stein conducted the Parsifal I attended and it was everything a lover of the piece could wish.  The production - 1978 - was 'conventional' but the performance and staging were worth every penny of the extortionate price.  The Transformation Scene was as close to a perfect staging as I will ever see.
He was not a charismatic figure but he was a fine musician and I thank him for his part in the overwhelming experience that evening.

When I was finding my way into Wagner as a teenager in the late 1970s, many of the non-Ring Wagner broadcasts from Bayreuth were conducted by Horst Stein - I remember hearing both Meistersinger and Parsifal (and still have the latter on cassettes, although they will probably be badly degraded by now) - and even if he had something of a reputation for delivering "brand X" Wagner I'm sure the solid musicianship and warmth I recall had a considerable influence on me.

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

I remember the first time I got captivated by a unique timbre and momentum in Beethoven's orchestral sound was in a recording of The Emperor Concerto with Horst Stein and Freidrich Gulda. A name I'll never forget even if I did not encounter it again very much after the first time.

Daniel, all five Beethoven piano concertos with Gulda, the VPO and Horst Stein have been re-issued by Brilliant Classics, in their Piano Concertos set, their Piano Sonatas and Concertos set, and in the Complete Works sets (85 CD and 100 CD versions). I too was greatly taken by the recording of the 5th concerto on LP, then a bargain single CD issue (with the 4th), and now the 100 CD set.

Not too easy to get in the UK at the moment, so try here for just the concertos.

Thanks very much for that, Bryn. I do have the records stashed away somewhere (it was the first boxed set I ever bought I think) but only own a turntable of longstanding defunctness, so it would be great to hear them again.
