I took part in a competition which he adjudicated once, he seemed such a nice person.

That is sad. I wasn't too familiar with his playing, but always heard great things about him from his students and I did meet him once - a charming and self-effacing man as I remember.

That's quite a shock. An absolute gent. Some of his early (1970s) Sorabji performances haven't been bettered - I'm thinking particularly of Fantasie espagnole.
