Well...it was 1935

 # 60          A speedy revival of the Aldeburgh D.I.V., George, is indeed a consummation devoutly to be wished.

I steered clear of the ENO production because I felt that I would be distracted by Ian Bostridge as Aschenbach.  My loss, I'm sure, as I do enjoy his CD recordings.   It's the stage persona which defeats me.

I even looked again at IB in an off-air video of "The Bartered Bride"; Sadler's Wells, Dec 1998; and, even supporting George Devine's strictures on an artist's right to fail, also recall a Bostridge recital at the Wigmore Hall and decided that enough was enough.

Peter Pears's performance remains the benchmark for me but I also greatly admired Philip Langridge in the role of Aschenbach.   I'm particularly keen to see Alan Oke in the role.

Alan Oke was the Bob Boles in the ON Grimes last year, and for me at least, one of the best things in the show: a wonderfully realised portrayal of the frankly unhinged zealot (who quite by chance had been got-up to look disarmingly close to my mental image of a certain occasional contibutor to both this board and the other place). I hope that one day he'll be given a stab at Grimes too: I have a feeling that he'd be much more suited to the part than the Peter I saw at Newcastle.

 # 62         Welcome back, Ron - and in good form, too.

Yes, Jeffrey Lloyd-Roberts seemed tired at Leeds after the regional tour of "Grimes".

Alan Oke has been patient and perhaps his "time in the sun" has now come.
