The French version of Don Carlos, I've just about got used to, but it's funny how if hearing an opera in a different language to the one you're used to, even in English, how different the work can sound. I have an Italian Mazeppa and Queen of Spades (or Dama di Picchi) and they almost sound like different works.

Didn't Callas and Christoff record an Italian Parsifal?

Though heavily cut AND in Italian, I admire the Callas/Christoff PARSIFAL, which (in a way) transforms Wagner into something rich and strange  Embarrassed

Hasn't MEISTERSINGER been called 'Wagner's most Mozartian opera'? Let's see what Taddei and Christoff make of it in Italian  Grin

Not sure about Italian Mozart or Verdi in German: I've always hesitated about purchasing Hotter's FIGARO or DFD's CARLO in this language.

Got the two Italian Tchaikovskies, but not the Jenufa (which seems difficult to track down  Cry). I've discovered a GUERRA E PACE with Corelli (!): anyone know this recording?

Yes, me! Heavily cut and only one track per scene*, but a strong Italian cast - Corelli as Pierre (or Pietro Bezukhov), Ettore Bastianini as Andrei, Rosanna Carteri as Natasha. I just love the opening scene - I think this was the opera's first performance in the West.

* In fairness to Andromeda, who published these performances, they claim that they have been unable to be tracked down the libretto Rodzinsky used in 1953, so a detailed list of tracks/ arias is not possible.

The Scala CARLO under Abbado is available from the Marketplace, but not (unfortunately) the Scala Jenufa, which (I see) is sung by Olivero and Bumbry (what a cast!).

Thanks, IGI, for the G&P info!

I have a late 60s German language recording of highlights from La Forza del Destino with Nicolai Gedda as Alvaro, Hermann Prey as Don Carlo and Grace Bumbry as Leonora - odd casting but it somehow works!

Hello, Ernani! I don't know this recording, but I have highlights in German featuring DFD as Don Carlo and other less famous soloists. On the whole, I do enjoy opera in translation, esp. Wagner. Anyone know if the 1970s ENO MASTERSINGERS (Goodall, Bailey et al) will be released by Chandos soon? I heard that the record company was still trapped with copyright issues or something like that. Was ENO's most recent RING broadcast on R3, and (if so) any hope of a CD or SACD (!) release?

I suspect you used the same 'direct offer' marketplace seller - very speedy folks.  Smiley

Rheingold arrived today and I've just had a listen, though have been working away at the same time, so not a thorough review. Speeds as I anticipated, which was rather refreshing, and textures light and clear. Alberich is a different singer to the Siegfried cast - Werner Van Mechelen. A surprise cast member, to me, was Chris Merritt as Loge - didn't sound as sly as some I've heard, but menacing in another way. Dohmen really delivers as Wotan. The Entry into Valhalla is much quicker than I've heard - it sounds triumphant, not hollow. Great anvils - eighteen of them tuned in F. Will give this a proper listen later on in the week!

I hadn't made this connection, but you're absolutely right, there's a wonderful innocence about it.

(Michael Tanner was less than complimentary, however...)

I wouldn't pay any attention to anything that Tanner writes.

He'll probably be certified insane one of these days.

#  32        A belated response, Parsifal 1882, to your query regarding the release of the"1970s" ENO Mastersingers.   I understood that the legal technicalities lay with Goodall's late 50s, Sadler's Wells production - my first prize as I settled in London.   I also recall a repeat R3 broadcast, possibly around the early 90s, and it was rejuvenating to hear the thrilling voices of Bailey & Remedios again: yes, they continued to repeat their roles at The Coli, until 1976 with Charles Mackerras; and I heard Bailey again - still in fresh voice and undiminished energy with Scottish Opera and Alex Gibson conducting in 1977.    I'm unaware that the 1970s productions were recorded but do recall the enthusiasm for the Solti and Jochum vinyl recordings around this time.

The 1958 production would now also benefit from remastering (pardon the pun).

Thanks, SS, for your reply. I might be mistaken about the decade during which the performance rumoured to be released by Chandos was taped, only assuming it was in '70s, and now I've remembered pictures in the ENO Guide to MEISTERSINGER taken at the Coli in 1968 of Bailey, Curphey and Remedios. I saw this opera only twice at Covent Garden in '96 and '97 (the second time was the last opera performace prior to the ROH's closure for refurbishment) and would love to hear (and see!) it in English. When was the last time it was done at ENO? Perhaps in '80s?

Having posted my message, earlier this afternoon, I put the Linbury production of "Owen Wingrave" on "record" and went out to do some gardening.    Thinking about the Goodall "Mastersingers", I suddenly realised that the recording was made much later, probably 1968.   I couldn't trace my Stephen Arlen biography of his work at Sadler's Wells but John Lucas's biography of "Reggie" (1993) confirmed my hunch.

The discography; Part 2, non-commercial recordings:

Wagner   The Mastersingers of Nuremberg (in English, complete)

Norman Bailey (bar), Connell Byrne (ten)  - where was Alberto at the time? -Margt Curphey (sop), Derek Hammond-Stroud (bar), Gregory Dempsey (ten) Clifford Grant (bass),  Sadler's Wells Opera Chorus and Orchestra, London Coliseum 18 September 1968.

BBC Sound Archives tape 33716.

I still rate Linda Esther Gray (Scottish Opera) and Lucia Popp (Covent Garden) as outstanding Eva's.

Earlier in the Lucas biography, he covers Goodall's neglect and his tendency to quirkiness at Covent Garden, and the hiatus after Andrew Porter and David Cairns and others had expressed their preference for Reggie's conducting of "Mastersingers" over several eminent conductors of the day.        And Rita Hunter's affectionate biography recalls her visits to his Valhalla at Covent Garden.

Let us hope that Chandos can untie the loopholes and release the 1968 recording.
