I missed the introduction to the broadcast.In what way was the performance an 'arrangement'?

I did notice the scoring seemed  very much sparer than  I  recall it. Did Britten thicken it up for the ROH production which closely followed the TV premiere?

David Matthews arranged it for chamber orchestra for these performances. He said it wasn't a very big orchestra originally, so it wasn't too difficult.

I listened, and I still don't like it!

Thanks,Mary. I always think I shouldn't judge an opera unless I  can see it as well as hear it, but, yes, sadly, I think this is BB below his best.

 A lot of1970s operas sound to me like plays declaimed  with orchestral sound effects. It was a great relief when I heard Sandy Goehr's 'Behold the Sun' with its back-to-Hindemith long contrapuntal choruses.
