I was under the impression that the attenders of comic operettas were rather morally superior to mere comic opera-goers.  But that's just me.

All too often "comic operas" fail to be very funny.  I wonder if it's because their stories - princes disguised as students, or Second Trombones, or exploitative gold-diggers turning-over ageing roues for all their lolly - are so stuck in the past or the world of fairytales?

Would anyone care to mention any modern comic operas (I mean new works, not modern productions of old ones) that have been more than a flash-in-the-pan, and might earn a place in the repertoire?  Most modern works seem obsessed with the world's horrors and tragedies...  which is very right & proper, but perhaps there is room for a grin now and then?

Not sure if it qualifies as a comic opera, but I've heard that Judith Weir's "A Night at the Chinese Opera" is very funny when staged, although the main theme is serious? I've booked to see Scottish Opera do it next year so will have a better idea after that.

Ho!
How about Nino Rota's "Il cappello di paglia di Firenza" first performed, I think, in 1977 at La Piccola Scala. The score is clever, delightful and amusing with well drawn characters.

Ho, Kittybriton and Reiner.  Apologies for recent absence but I'm at the time of life when old colleagues are tending to depart this life.  I've been over in New York following the death of a dear friend and, whilst there, extended my stay to visit quite a few old colleagues.  Their welcome and warmth chatting about the old days, with lots of laughter, has done me a power of good so I'm raring to go again.
Trust that you are both fit and well.
Cheers

Top stuff, Soundwave!  There is nothing like a trip away to break the routine and recharge your batteries, although I'm sorry yours was occasioned by sadder circumstances.

I've also been away from here for about 6 weeks, with a trip abroad being the main reason... now feeling in top form and raring to get back in the saddle!
