I've just lugged my enormously heavy Revox reel-to-reel down to the living room to use for the first time for I don't know how many years. What prompted me was getting the full orchestral score of Don Giovanni out of the library today, so I wanted to play a recording I made off Radio 3 in January 1976 of the 1936 Glyndebourne recording under Fritz Busch with John Brownlee as the Don. Wonderful to hear it again.

I did a bit of googling and found it's been released on Naxos - then found that there was some dispute with EMI and it looks as though it was subsequently withdrawn.  Angry Does anyone know any more?

So I'll probably have to stick to my recording. I might have a go at transferring it off the tape onto CDs.

You're right, thanks. I was on the American Amazon, I think, where they were writing about it being withdrawn but I've just found the set on the Naxos web site so it must still be available. Also amazon.co.uk say they have 4 in stock.

In fact the Naxos web site says "Not available in the United States due to possible copyright restrictions" - so that explains everything.

I've had a really enjoyable evening listening to Act 1 of my recording, what a wonderful work Don G is, definitely my favourite opera. Funnily enough I'm not too keen on Mozart in general!  Cheesy

EMI made their own CD release of this famous recording.I don't know if it is still available. It brings the performance to life splendidly.

I remember the broadcast you mention.I guess it was made from the early 1950s LP transfers, ALP1199-1201.

Although the recording was made at Glyndebourne  it was done under studio conditions.

I remember there being an EMI CD release but I never got round to buying it as I already had my recording from R3. I didn't find any référence to it on Amazon so that probably means it's been deleted - I think lots of Références discs have gone.

I used to have a wonderful Références compilation of Keith Hardwick's transfers of Lotte Lehmann, which was stolen. Unfortunately EMI had deleted it so I couldn't replace it. However I found a copy in a library, of which I'm a member, so I had no compunctions about making my own copy of it.
