Feeling a big jaded at the moment and was thinking about a quick hop over to Deutschland in the next few weeks.  Of all the opera houses, Munich's seems the most appealing at the moment (I was over there in January).  I notice that they're doing a 'Hollander', with a strong cast.

However, I notice that the production is by the above-named director.  I recall reading a long article about him in Opera Now some time ago, to the effect that he's an extreme radical and is fond of such things as interrpting the music, so that a comment can be made on what's going on (apparently, he had the assembled throng shouting 'Do you realise what you've just said?!' at the end of Sach's 'Nazilied'  at the end of Meistersingers. The likes of Waltraud Meier apparently refuse to work with him again.

I'm just wondering whether his reputation is well-founded.  Anyone here seen any of his productions? I don't mind radicalism a la Richard Jones, where there is an obvious respect for the work of the composer and librettist (and, no, I didn't see his Ring, so can't comment on that), but some things are beyond the pale.

I saw the Meistersinger  Roll Eyes He's certainly an 'interesting' producer (and son of a famous conductor), but, SK, I feel bound to say that attending a Konwitschny production might only cause the old blood pressure to rise... Perhaps Christof Loy's production of Il Turco in Italia might be a safer antidote for jadedness?  Wink

Sorry, never seen any of his work.  I hope you enjoy whatever you end up seeing Smiley

BTW the Richard Jones Glyndebourne MACBETH is on tour (with a GTO cast) from end-October onwards.

I thought you were saying live performances were hardly worth going to the end of the street for, let alone Germany?  Wink

Good grief. Sounds like the MTV thought bubble. But clearly an idea with promise.

He did a Tristan in Munich which I`m sure is available on DVD - Mehta conducting - and part of the Stuttgart "Ring" also available on DVD.  I would say "aggressively modern" and not for those of us who like even vaguely traditional stagings...
