Great, so I think this should be my first trip to Glyndebourne. Tell you what, martle, if me and George throw in a fiver each petrol money you could pick us both up from Lewes and we'll save £1 on the bus and still leave you ten quid richer. How's that for a deal?

I seem to be the only Member who's ever heard anything interesting in Eötvös' Three Sisters. The way it was constructed and the overall sound of it rather turned me on. Having said that I haven't actually listened to the recording since soon after I acquired it (which was soon after it came out, the thought being that something like that would be deleted in the twinkling of an eye). I have this nagging thought always in my mind that since Eötvös is such a fine conductor, and since he seems to be interested in much of the same music as I am, his own music ought to be interesting too, whereas in truth more often than not I find it kind of slides off my ears rather than engaging them. The idea of Glyndebourne turns me right off though.

Oh, and a slightly sooner date for your diaries - and this one really is free! Plus I'm reliably informed that this is the earlier and much more musically interesting Eötvös: http://www.philharmonia.co.uk/mot4oct07/?PHPSESSID=pf74fnqnv263gd70u

Indeed, and it often does me too. You either go with the picnic and dickie bow shenanigans, or you ignore them. (The latter option is quite possible these days - most of the 'toffs' are no such thing, more like nouveau riche city types showing off to their girl/boy friends and looking uncomfortable. The only time I ever had something stolen from me, other than a burglary recently, was at Glyndebourne. Modest picnic, went to the loo, came back, wine glasses gone. I ask you.) Anyway, despite all that, it's still one of the best companies in the country and worth it for the music more often than not. They commission new work, mount innovative/ contoversial productions of old work and have a pretty impressive 'outreach' and education programme (never mind Tangiers Tattoo). And not a penny of state subsidy to be seen anywhere.

Although I rather like making an effort for the day, I was lucky enough this year to have had an acquaintance in the cast of Tristan und Isolde who gave me tickets for the dress rehearsal. Besides it being a rather wonderful performance, the dress rehearsal "vibe" was extremely pleasant. No dress code, no pretension, and the entire audience was there for the music.

Dress code? Did someone say dress code? Can we do Reservoir Dogs? Me, George, martle, and I really think Richard should be up for this one too!

Whoops. Sorry about that Marters. I was only doing a bit of redistribution of wealth during the interval. If I'd known it was you....
