British soprano Susan Bullock flew in at less than 24hrs notice to take over Brunnhilde from an indisposed Lisa Gasteen in WALKURE, and sang the show without either an orchestral rehearsal or a technical run...   she was walked through the production by ROH staff briefly before going on.

As Bullock was contracted to sing in Lyon the following night, Danish soprano Irene Theorin stepped out of singing Helmwige to take over the main soprano role in SIEGFRIED.

I heard about this in the other place.  Wish I'd been there actually!  I'm seeing Cycle 3, starting tomorrow.

SB sang her first complete "cycle" in a Warner's Tokyo production, so she's up to speed about how he works.  She's subsequently done at least two other productions of THE RING, so she had it all under her belt aforehand Smiley

Many people think she should have been booked for the ROH cycles in the first place.

Another native singer frozen out (or maybe priced out?) of Covent Garden?

My awareness of Bullock has only been fitful over the years, but I always used to confuse her with Allesandra Marc....checking out SB's net photos, she seems to have lost a lot of weight in recent years?

She sang a rather wonderful Isolde for ENO just before the house closed for refurbishment in 2003.  She's really blossoming in this repertoire.

In fact I recall that I attended the final performance of that ENO Tristan on 8th June 2003 - then on 9th June 2003 went down to Glyndebourne to see theirs (although "see" is a bit of an exaggeration, given how restricted-view my standing place was).  I was reminded of this double Tristan this year when I went back to Glyndebourne for the dress rehearsal of the revival, and happened to spot Susan Bullock in the audience.  It caused me to muse upon the fact that I saw both Bullock and Stemme as Isolde within a day of each other, but Bullock is now singing Brünnhildes while Stemme is doing Sieglindes.

I rather imagine Keith Warner was one of those many people.

SB has been singing Brunnhilde all over Europe now, and has also moved into the Richard Strauss repertoire, singing an extremely good ELEKTRA.

Hurrah!  A quick web search has revealed that she will be doing so at Covent Garden next season.

I was at that performance, and at the subsequent performance of SIEGFRIED.
