Thought this was the most obvious place to put this.

When I bought this set just over a year ago, I didn't have a suitable system to play the DVD on (I bought the 4 disc version).  Yesterday, however, I took delivery of a new TV with surround sound.  Having tried out a few of my favourite discs on it, the idea of listening to a whole opera in one sitting, while the libretto unfurled on screen, was too enticing to be put off.  So, I tried the Tristan dvd, only to find that , although it seemed to play OK, there was no sound!

Anyone else had this problem with this set? I don't suppose I've any form of redress now, as I bought the thing well over a year ago....a salutary reminder, perhaps, to check out what you've bought IMMEDIATELY after you've bought it.  Angry

It might just be a settings issue, SK: but if it really has no soundtrack, it won't be alone, and EMI will be aware of the problem. Try it on someone else's system or computer first. If it's still silent, then contact the manufacturer direct.

I'm a technical numskull on this kind of thing...  is this a special kind of DVD that only plays in surround-sound,  or should it play on any DVD system?

Ron's right, SK. Try it on someone else's player or on your computer first, just to check it's not a settings issue, but otherwise it is still worth trying to get a replacement. Actually, the shop you bought it from is legally obliged to replace faulty goods, and I'm not sure whether this contract is considered to have expired even if it is a year later. But you may find it more straightforward to contact EMI directly - try 020 7467 2000 or 020 7605 5050 (not sure which of those is customer service, sorry). Explain the circumstances to them and they probably won't expect you to go via your retailer.

Swan Knight,

It is definitely a settings issue.  The DVD surround sound track is in DTS.  I expect that your TV can only decode Dolby Digital soundtracks.  This is why there will be no sound when you choose the surround sound option on the disc.

The DVD includes a Dolby Digital stereo soundtrack, which you should be able to listen to on your TV, although this will only be in stereo (or in dolby pro-logic if you allow your TV to create a surround sound image from the stereo tracks).  You will then at least be able to listen while having the text shown on your TV.

To experience the surround track (which is pretty good), you will need equipment capable of decoding the DTS track.  Any surround sound receiver or amp will almost certainly include this as a standard option.

I hope this helps.

<< don't suppose I've any form of redress now, as I bought the thing well over a year ago>>

Are you sure, Swan Knight?  If a product is manifestly unfit for purpose the fact that you bought it a year ago shouldn't matter.  If you have proof of purchase any reputable retailer ought to offer at least a replacement.  A refund might be more difficult to get as there are other factors involved - changing prices etc - but you ought to be given that for which you paid.
