How sad that they should focus on the new york met when we have the royal opera house and some good stuff at the london coliseum care of www.eno.org , do we really need those yankee doodle dandy operas ?

I find all the "word from our sponsor" stuff grates with the Met Broadcasts...  the BBC is supposed to be immune from that stuff?

Could we broaden this section of the Message-Boards to cover ALL opera, and not only that broadcast on R3?   Smiley

Ho!  I seem to remember posting "in another place" a question as to why the subsidised "national" Royal Opera's productions should not be available to the BBC (another tax subsidised national Company) for telivision transmission.  If we, the public, in effect subsidise and pay both large amounts, surely we are entitled to a reasonable return.

Now Soundwave, old chap...  d'y'mean to tell me that because you've paid your taxes, you believe you are entitled to get something in return for them?   Shocked     No, no...  I mean, imagine if people thought they were entitled to healthcare on the NHS for the same reason?

Ho Reiner.  You know that I'm a simple, innocent, easily lead, modest sort of chap.  Have I been misled all these years by Governments of a couple of countries in whom I put my childlike trust?   I think I'll have another Malt now!

And another thing, does anyone else think the presenting of this Met season has been a considerable decline on previous years. They have far to many short features and interviews packed in. The plot summaries are now presented by two people nattering away inanely like football comentators ( "This next quarter is definitely a make or break period for Mimi" "Thats right Jim. If she can show a bit more aggression she'll be hoping to be pushing for another touchdown.") And the new format of the Met opera quiz really really sucks.

I tend to turn to Radio 3 on a Saturday night to see if I like the sound and voices of whatever they are playing without looking for details, and then listen while on the computer or reading. I must say that last night the music and singing definitely caught my attention. I turn the sound down very low during the intervals and only heard at the end the name of the opera I had been hearing (Jenufa by Janacek) I liked the soprano voices better than the bass (or the baritone, but bass I'm almost certain) whose vibrato was too vibrato for my liking.

I would be interested to hear views and criticism of this performance.

SusanDoris

You might be interested to read the comments on the thread below called "Jenufa" which was started in response to last night's broadcast. I'm afraid I didn't hear it and so can't comment !
