I'm sad to report the death of the opera and theatre director Steven Pimlott, who lost his battle with cancer on 14th Feb, aged 52.

SP began his career as a Staff Director at ENO, where his direct contemporaries included Malcolm Hunter, Nicholas Hytner and Keith Warner.  Many of us here on these boards saw his recent EVGENY ONEGIN at the Royal Opera House, which was a magnificent example of his work...   this production was extensively discussed back on the "old board".   At the time of his death he'd been working on a Tennessee Williams piece for the National Theatre, which will now be taken-over by Nicholas Hytner.

There are appreciations and obituaries in several of the UK "qualities" today.

That's sad news; he and Nick Hytner were the 'baby' staff producers when I was at ENO, both very talented, though I doubt that many then thought they'd achieve so much. I remember Steven as being unassuming and quiet, though great at getting brilliant results from performers. A sad loss indeed.

I had a feeling you might remember Steve, Ron.  A marvellously talented and charming man, whose addiction to the "softly-softly" approach won-out in the end.

His production of 'Onegin' at the ROH was, indeed, a standout.  One of the finest opera productions I have ever seen.
