Anyone else watching the Rheingold production on BBC4, and think the characters of Fasolt and Fafner look like refugees from a Tefal advert?

The sets looked much better on TV than they did in the theatre.  My impression from half way back in the centre stalls was that the stage was a mess.

By the way, I was there the night that Froh lost his voice and croaked his way through his part.  Why do performers still go on when they cannot do the job?  He should have been substituted.

Sometimes it's a question of how much of their fee they stand to lose, and how willing they are to let a cover on....  Angry

I'm catching up with it now: this part at least is miles better than I'd been led to believe and works very well on the small screen: Langridge as Loge totally stealing the show -  a fabulous performance.

I enjoyed it too apart from Alberich's horrible laboratory, but I was surprised when Portaloo said Erda had been on stage throughout as I hadn't noticed her until she started singing - where was she then?

harpy
As I recall she was stage right close to the proscenium, with her back to the audience. Could be wrong though. I recorded Rheingold and am looking forward to finding the time to watch it.

Thanks, Ulrica - will have to have a closer look at my own recording then!
