Quote
I'm now rewinding the tapes of my life to see how often I have embarrassed myself in front of other people.
Are you sure that's a good idea? I wouldn't want to try it.

I spend most of my life doing it, Richard. It is definitely not a good idea. All those small idiocies, misunderstandings, moments of impatience or unkindness, failures to help when the opportunity was there... all passing by in front of my eyes time and time again in an Endless Parade. I know just how Macbeth and Richard lll felt when they couldn't sleep. But I suppose, credit where credit's due, I haven't actually murdered many kings......

>> I noticed that their Mr Broucek wasn't admitting to having sung the part before, but apparently he has really: http://www.arskoncert.cz/en/ <<

Frankly if I'd sung the role for an organisation called "arskoncert" I'd not want to make a big thing of it either Wink

Grin Fair point (although he actually sang it for the National Theatre in Prague).

I note that my favourite American cut-out warehouse - Berkshire Record Outlet - has added a DVD of Broucek to its listings: it's conducted by Bryan Balkwill and seems to date from 1982, so is probably Canadian in origin, and won't be of the finest video quality if their other DVDs are anything to go by: probably a dub from a TV broadcast. On the other hand at $8.99, it might provide a useful second way into the piece.

(Alongside it btw are a 2004 Bologna Fille du Regiment with Flores, and a 1978 Albert Herring with Pauline Tinsley, which I'm all but certain is a Canadian one we watched intermittently between cues in the Green Room at the Coli during a 'Twilight' performance...if so, I'll grab it to find out who the baritone playing Sid was. Even from the hardest-bitten, most critical chorus members who were watching there was nothing but praise for his wonderful singing.)

A Broadcast Has Been Announced

Yes, folks, the seriously good timing squad (Patron: R Wright) have managed to sneak the Barbican performance into next week's schedule. Would anyone be even the slightest bit surprised to discover that it's on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. for two and a half hours?

....I thought not.......

True - sadly the quality of that is pretty unbearable (but that's a whole other rant).

I set the scheduler on my Bug to save this afternoon's mp2, however, as 5LSX was on air, I guess that Radio 3 will have been at 160kbps joint stereo. I will check once Po3, which I also set the scheduler to save, is over. At least Po3 is at 192kbps.

Would be interested in the answer on that one Bryn. I thought the sound wasn't bad at all this afternoon.

I did think it a pity though to tuck this away on a weekday afternoon when it really deserved to be a BBC showcase 'event'.

George, it was indeed 160kbps joint stereo. I am unable to assess the audio quality as yet. I will burn it to a CD-R before too long and play it back through something a bit better than the 25mm speakers attached to this laptop. Not tonight though.

There is supposed to be a CD release of the performance later - but probably without interval talks...
