I finally got round to picking up a copy of Broucek a week or two back (still to listen to), but it was the Czech Phil under Jilek. I bought this one in part because I didn't think Mackerras had done one. Needless to say, if he does have a version available, I would very much like to add it to my collection. Please could you provide some more details (e.g. label).

Thanks.

And as a footnote don't forget, Broucek enthusiasts, that Jiri Belohlavek is conducting the BBCSO and an all Czech cast (well 'all Slavic', as the lawyers seem to have cautioned) in a 'concert staging' next Sunday (25th) at the Barbican. Any other MBers going?

It will obviously be broadcast on R3 sometime, """"""""""'live""""""""""' but presumably not live.

Yes, Mr Harpy and I are - also to the educational event beforehand, which is just as well as we know 0 about it. See some of you there maybe?

Excellent! Shouldn't we three all be in bed by now though?

(Sorry, I'll rephrase that. Shouldn't we individually, or not necessarily individually of course, but not 'not individually'  in company with another of the individual......you know what I mean.)

Incidentally, if anyone is thinking of coming along on spec to Mr Broucek on Sunday I keep getting letters and e-mails (three so far!) from the BBC and the Barbican telling me that it really does start at 7.00 not 7.30. Apparently some of the publicity somewhere had it down as 7.30.

There's something a bit Roger Wrightish about this 7.00 start obsession. But even then they don't broadcast it live Sad

I think I've had three of those as well, plus a couple more messages to say they've changed the room for the talk beforehand. It must be costing them a bit, all that communication.

Assuming there's an interval at this, we'll probably be hanging around the bar (the one nearest the lake) at the interval, and would be delighted to say "hello" to any of you who are there.

I'll probably wear a jumper with multicoloured stripes for ease of recognition. Otherwise we've got greying hair, specs etc, same as 99% of the audience Cheesy

Sorry not to see any of you, but wasn't it a wonderful performance? I feel as if I've been to Prague - not so convinced about the moon  Grin

Apparently they are going to put it on CD as well as broadcast it on Radio 3.

Sorry we did not meet up too, Harpy. I did have a look out for multi-coloured stripes near the bars in both the circle and stalls levels but didn't identify you I'm afraid. A complete dearth of stripes! I was half-expecting my reconnoitring behavour to attract attention (from the security staff if no one else). If it did I was the inoffensive chap in the brown pullover circling rather oddly.

But I agree. I thought it was very good. I didn't know it all before except for one dimly remembered radio broadcast some time ago but it seemed to me very well done particularly by the soloists who presumably knew their roles inside out. All relying on scores though. I rather envied you for having had a seminar on the piece beforehand. I would definitely have benefited from that I think.

A real treat though. I suppose in it's satiric fantasy style it reminded me of 'The Nose' as much as anything, I mean theatrically, not musically. I wonder if Shostakovich knew it. I didn't know that it was being recorded for CD as well so thanks for that. I suppose it helps explain why someone was kind enough to fly a top-notch Czech cast in all for our pleasure and convenience at just one performance. I may as well get it out of the way and admit that I'm now seriously in love with Maria Haan (Malinka etc) who I thought sang wonderfully. And I am coming more and more to the view that Jiri Belohlavek is A Very Good Thing. The BBCSO certainly looked to me much more bright and bushy-tailed under his leadership.

Did you notice, by the way, that not only was John Tusa there (as ever) but also Nicholas Kenyon and.......Roger Wright, chief demon of the moment but looking rather pleased with himself. No, I didn't quite have the nerve to go up and start haranguing him about the R3 Message Boards I'm afraid but I did give him a Paddington Bear stare.

Apologies George - we'll have to make a more specific rendez-vous another time. I didn't notice a circling brown pullover but I don't like to stare around too much in case people get the wrong idea Grin I didn't see Wright et al either but I'm glad to hear you did the right thing.

Yes, the orchestra seemed quite inspired didn't they? Let's hope this might be the first of a series of similar Janacek events. Don't think I'd heard any of these singers before but I would certainly like to hear them again. Was the one who sang Mr Broucek using a score too? I couldn't really see from where we were.

The seminar was excellent in parts - at least I discovered there was no point in looking for a close thematic link between the two parts as there probably isn't one. (They satirise different aspects of Czech society but Mr B seems to be part of what is satirised in the Hussite one, but not the moon one.)  It also reminded us that Janacek was extremely patriotic so the subject matter of the second half was dear to his heart. It was at the seminar that the CDs were mentioned but I don't know how definite that is.

He had one with him on the music stand(s) but I don't think he referred to it very much. I had rather assumed from his performance that Broucek must be 'his' role back home in Prague but, having just had a look, it doesn't actually get a mention in his biography in the programme.

I may as well also admit that before Sunday I thought it was 'Broo-check' rather than 'Brow-check'. I'm now rewinding the tapes of my life to see how often I have embarrassed myself in front of other people.

Are you sure that's a good idea? I wouldn't want to try it.

I noticed that their Mr Broucek wasn't admitting to having sung the part before, but apparently he has really: http://www.arskoncert.cz/en/umelci/?id=156

Even so it all seemed to go amazingly smoothly considering that (if I heard correctly) they'd only been rehearsing together since Wednesday.
