Well...it was 1935

« on: 17:23:14, 25-04-2008 »

Fascinated and surprised to see a 9 minute item on ENO at the Young Vic, on Newsnight, yesterday.    Surprised because any coverage of the arts on BBC 2 is usually under sufferance; no more than a token gesture.

Fascinated as it presented clips from 'Punch & Judy' and an operatic version of 'Lost Highway' based on David Lynch's film.   Even a snatch of 'The Minotaur' at Covent Garden.   Is't possible that these productions have been filmed as it must have been expensive to bring in camera crews for snippets?

Far too many sound bites as a substitute for discussion and I had to view my recording again, today, to get the gist of it all.   It seems that we have now moved away from the elitist concept of opera and John Berry, artistic director, ENO, favoured a more intimate staging for the Young Vic, by using a theatre-in-the-round facility (hear, hear) which would automatically shrink the cavernous space of The Coliseum for his planned season.   'Gadaffi' had been a flop at St Martin's Lane but Philip Glass's 'Satyagraha' attracted "78% first time attendees" (sic).    In turn, perhaps the Young Vic venture could encourage a crossover to The Coli for Mozart and Verdi - and did I hear him say Lehar?

Another contributor added that opera was also perceived as precious compared to the intense and radical experience of the movies but it could also be more daring in its use of technology in a more shrunk space.

Several interesting facets and tempting extracts in the shrunk space of less than 10 minutes and it is frustrating when BBC 1 is given at least 6 hours prime time coverage to publicise a new production of 'Oliver':  -   'You Could be Nancy' or holding a publicity brochure, throughout, titled 'I'll Do Anything', which the presenter does, as he clutches his prejudices to his bosom like a feather boa!   Roll Eyes

Good heavens, was it Charles Hazelwood? Wink

I have seen rumours that The Minotaur is being or has been filmed, some say for TV and some say for DVD. Either way I hope it's true.

#1     Reiner.    'Hold your hand out, you naughty boy'!     Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

# 2    Good news, if true. Harpy.   The clip of "The Minotaur' gave me the impression that it was more than a mock-up.

There were cameras in evidence at tonight's performance (25 April) with a note on the programme, "Tonight's performance is being filmed by Opus Arte for future release on DVD".

Very much indeed, opilec. I'd endorse everything you say about it in your recent post over on The Minotaur thread proper. I might post a few comments there tomorrow but at the moment I'm still reeling.

Meanwhile at the Young Vic ... Radio 3 was in attendance at this afternoon's performance of ENO's Punch and Judy. The broadcast will be some time yet to specified in June, said a friendly BBC person.

Sorry I somehow missed you Harpy. I was looking out for you and Mr Harpy but, despite what I thought was methodical reconnoitring, failed to spot where you were sitting.

Oh excellent news, I had so much wanted to see that, and now it seems I will get the chance - at least on the small screen Smiley

[Radio 3, I'm afraid, Reiner, sans even a small screen. But it's something.]

Aha Sad   But even hearing it will be something Smiley   I've contrived to miss both P&Js, Minotaur & Lost Highway, so I would like to catch up with at least some of it.  Hopefully I shall be around for POWDER HER FACE, though Smiley

I'm off to POWDER HER FACE on 13th June, Reiner.  I wonder if we might coincide?

Oh, sorry about that George - we were looking out for you as well. Better luck next time. I missed R3 as well...

Hope you enjoyed it? I think I liked the MTW/Linbury production slightly better (less hyperactive), but there were some smashing performances today, and their little crocodiles made up for a lot.

I seem to be going to "Powder Her Face" on 22nd June. Sundays have improved a lot lately.
