Where might I find a definitive list of voice types for the Valkyries (the group of characters, rather than the opera as a whole if you see what I mean)? The Schirmer vocal score says just "soprano and alto", and the Wikipedia entry lists just one alto, plus sops, plus mezzos, and Wagner Operas.com says a combination of sops and mezzos. Is there a definitive line-up?

Is there a definitive line-up? I thought it was four sopranos, two mezzos and two altos, which I now see someone has indeed written into the contents of my pre-owned score of the opera. There's a definitive source for you!

That sounds about right, glancing through the respective tessituras in that online copy of the score.
(BTW - I don't even know if this is a stupid question to be asking - someone tell me if it is!)

Hmm, who's the fourth soprano after Helmwige, Gerhilde and Ortlinde?I thought Rossweisse, Siegrune, Grimgerde and Waltraute were all mezzos, and Schwertleite is lower.
I don't have a score, though - just going on who I've heard sing them, and the tessitura of the bits where I can remember which one is singing...

I have a sneaking recollection (being at work and therefore without score or Kobbe) that Waltraute is a different voice in Walkure from Gotterdammerung - which would suggest that she is the fourth soprano. But I could be completely wrong.

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

I had that same sneaking feeling, PW, but then I Googled "Waltraute Walkure" and came up with a loooooooong list of mezzos

My aforementioned score has Gerhilde, Ortlinde, Helmwige, and Grimgerde as sopranos, Waltraute and Siegrune as mezzos, and Schwertleite and Rossweisse as altos. Caveats etc.

Kobbe has:
Sopranos - Gerhilde, Helmwige, Ortlinde Mezzos - Waltraute, Rossweise, Siegrune, Grimgerde Contralto - Schwerleite
which is consistent with the layout of the stave in the score.

Thanks chaps - PW's layout looks good to my eyes: I'll try searching a few character names in Grove Opera and see who sang them, that might help.
(The reasons I need to know this are duller than you can imagine. It's not even a pub quiz question.)
